As indicated by the packaging, Vitafusion MultiVites seems to be the complete Multivitamin for daily use. It is stated to provide essential vitamins and minerals. And to be a great tasting option. Furthermore, it is also claimed to be an excellent Vitamin B5, B6, B9, and B12 source [R].
And not only that. In November 2017 it was the Amazon #1 Bestseller in category Multivitamin Supplements.
In the Vitafusion MultiVites review we will challenge everything about the supplement. We will look at its ingredients and the possible benefits to ultimately determine if this supplement is something you might want for your health.
Nutrient Amounts & Efficiency
There Is Some Serious Lack of Very Important Vitamins
Vitafusion MultiVites has Vitamin A, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12, C, D3, E, and Choline. Thus, the vitamins missing (that are also extremely important to have) are B1, B2, and K1. Hence, I wouldn’t consider this to be a good thing. In my opinion, this alone could be a reason for it not to be one of the best multivitamin supplements.
All in all, there is a complete and utter lack across the board in terms of vitamin amounts (see Prime Daily Values). The only exception here would be Vitamin D3 and partly Vitamin A.
Whereas, Vitamin B6, B9, and B12 all are present in quite the weak forms. The best and most effective forms for these vitamins are Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate, L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, and Methylcobalamin respectively [R, R, R, R].
Vitamin C in the Vitafusion MultiVites is present in two forms. One of which is a variation of the best forms available and the other is kind of a standard when it comes to Vitamin C supplementation [R, R].
On the other hand, Vitamin E here is in a very poor form – one of the worst in my opinion. This synthetic form has a very poor absorption rate. Furthermore, by having only this form of Vitamin E, you are missing out on 7 more types of Vitamin E that are all important (well, at least having half of these types would be optimal for a multivitamin supplement) [R, R, R, R].
Vitafusion Multivites Barely Provides Any Minerals
Vitafusion MultiVites is not really a multivitamin supplement that can take pride in having good amounts of minerals. This supplement has only 3 of complete 12 minerals that are ideal for a multivitamin supplement.
The amounts that Vitafusion MultiVites provides for the first two minerals are good, as for the third – not so much.
The Supplement Does, However, Have Inositol
Vitafusion MultiVites is not very rich in the “Other Beneficial Substances” department. The only one – Inositol.
Well, on one hand Inositol is something that is also produced by our bodies, but on the other hand there are some undeniable and incredible benefits for taking Inositol daily. It improves mental health, has positive effects on curing depression, anxiety, panic attacks and has many different other benefits [R, R, R, R, R, R, R].
I must add though that the amounts of Inositol in the supplement are well below what’s recommended.
Overall, the Vitafusion MultiVites looks not very great from the nutrient and their efficiency point of view.
Additives Do Explain It Being Tasty
You might ask, “If it’s all bad… Why is it then #1 Best Seller on Amazon? You must be not getting something.”
Well, my friend… The answer to your question most likely lies in the additive that I am about to discuss. Glucose syrup.
Have you ever heard of the devastating adverse effects of High Fructose Corn Syrup? Like weight gain, cancer promotion, liver damage, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, leaky gut and many other [R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R]?
Well, Glucose syrup is that same thing, it’s only a different name. A different name developed and used to hide this devastating and hazardous substance called High Fructose Corn Syrup [R, R, R, R, R, R].
Furthermore, not only it makes the pills of Vitafusion MultiVites sweeter than sugar, but it literally makes those pills more addicting than cocaine [R, R]. I mean, taking vitamins with this ingredient is like trying to improve your health by taking poison.
But that’s not it. There’s also Sucrose, which is “a crystalline disaccharide, C12 H22 O11, the sugar obtained from the sugarcane, the sugar beet, and sorghum, and forming the greater part of maple sugar; sugar.” [R]. All chemistry aside, it’s sugar.
And sugar does not bring anything good. The consumption of great amounts of sugar is linked to obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, aggressive behavior, hyperactivity, eating disorders, cancer, learning difficulties and many, many more adverse effects [R, R, R, R, R, R].
Therefore, sugar is something that we definitely don’t want in any of our supplements.
Gelatin is a substance made out of animal skin, tendons, ligaments, tissue and bones [R, R, R]. I suppose this is the reason, why it’s known to have such side effects as bloating, belching and unpleasant taste [R].
But this is also the reason, why Gelatin has some pretty awesome health benefits (basically, Gelatin is 98-99% protein). And because it is full of protein, it is also full of amino acids (such as glycine, alanine, proline and some other) [R, R, R]. And this union of amino acids improves the health of our joints, gut, skin, and also cognitive abilities [R, R, R, R].
So, no need to be afraid of Gelatin, besides the fact that it’s made out of not very appetizing animal body parts.
Beeswax (also known as E901) is the refined wax findable in honeycombs. It is quite a complex compound containing many different components (esters, free fatty acids, and alcohols hydrocarbons) [R, R, R].
There is a study on rats, which suggests that Beeswax in crazy big amounts might be toxic, yet then again most substances are [R]. Some say it may cause intestinal blockage in large amounts [R, R]. Other than that, it’s declared side-effects-free [R, R, R, R, R].
Nonetheless, Citric acid in food and supplement is known to possess some potentially hazardous qualities. For example, it increases the absorption rate of incidentally consumed aluminum in the body (aluminum utensils, anyone?) [R]. This aluminum, if not properly eliminated from the body, finds its way into the brain and potentially increases the risk of such diseases as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and few similar ones [R, R].
In excess amounts (you’ll find citric acid being an ingredient to very many foods) Citric acid is known to induce radicals, which then attack all molecules in the human body (this also includes DNA) [R, R]. Excess use can also cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, tooth decay and few other side effects [R, R, R, R, R].
There are additional concerns when considering the manufacturing process of Citric acid. Nowadays Citric Acid is no longer extracted from citrus fruits. It is made by fermenting a plant called Aspergillus niger, which most likely is GMO [R, R].
Don’t get me wrong Citric acid in fruits is very beneficial, so eat fruits [R, R]. But try to avoid excess use of Citric acid while consuming processed foods and drinks. And lose your aluminum utensils, buy some stainless steel ones instead.
Colors (Annatto Extract, Blueberry and Carrot Concentrates) is something that I would recommend to avoid. Although all of these colours seem to be from natural sources, this does not guarantee their safety. Colors like Annatto can have some really unpleasant side effects [R, R, R, R, R].
Nonetheless, colors from natural sources are the better option, artificial ones have been proved to be toxic, therefore are avoidable at all costs [R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R]. In general, food coloring is not something we want in a multivitamin supplement.
Fractioned coconut oil has some great benefits, which include weight-loss, a decrease of insulin resistance, improvement of brain health [R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R, R]. Consuming large amounts of the substance may result in diarrhea, nausea, bloating and vomiting [R, R, R, R].
Lactic Acid (also known as E270) is a natural acid that is made by bacteria in fermented foods. Therefore, lactic acid can be found in all fermented foods such as cheese, milk, yogurt, and other similar products. Lactic acid also naturally occurs in the blood during exercise. Furthermore, Lactic acid seems to be the most beneficial [R, R, R, R, R, R, R].
As regards to any potential adverse effects, I didn’t find much. Few report that it should not be given to small children and babies because their guts can’t process it [R, R]. Other than that, Lactic Acid seems to be side effect-less [R, R, R, R, R].
Safety of Natural Flavours is (to say the least) questionable [R, R]. A great chance exists that there might be nothing “natural” about flavoring. This generally is because both artificial and natural flavors may contain some so-called “incidental additives” (additional solvents, preservatives, etc.) that are not required to be shown on the label [R, R, R, R].
Therefore, one should preferably always investigate further, when considering the use of any of these Natural Flavours. And do this by asking the manufacturer for additional information on the ingredient.
But in this case, doing so would serve no purpose. There are bigger “must avoid” in this supplement that makes it not a good multivitamin supplement choice.
Sucrose And Glucose Syrup Is What Defines This MultiVites
As you might have guessed it by now – Vitafusion MultiVites is not a good multivitamin supplement.
The vitamin forms are pretty much bad for every nutrient (with very few exceptions). The amounts of nutrients are very poor also.
Then there are additives. No supplement with sucrose or glucose syrup should be taken to improve one’s health. Not only do they have the potential of inducing many side effects, but also they make you dumb. Literally!
Therefore, Vitafusion MultiVites should be avoided.
