|Essence||Magnesium Phosphate or E343 is a Magnesium salt of phosphoric acid that is used in supplements both as an additive primarily fulfilling the role of an acidity regulator or firming agent and the beneficial ingredient. It presents itself as a white crystalline powder. Three different Magnesium Phosphates exist: 1) Monomagnesium Phosphate or E343(i), Dimagnesium Phosphate or E343(ii), and Trimagnesium Phosphate or E343(iii).|
|Names||For E343(i), they are Magnesium dihydrogen phosphate, acid magnesium phosphate, and monobasic magnesium phosphate.
For E343(ii), they are magnesium hydrogen phosphate, magnesium phosphate monohydrate, and dibasic magnesium phosphate.
For E343(iii), they are Magnesium hydrogen phosphate trihydrate, magnesium phosphate tribasic trihydrate, and magnesium orthophosphate trihydrate.
Whereas for E343 in general, they can be Magnesium orthophosphate, Magnesium acid phosphate, Magnesium polyphosphate, and others.
|Sourcing||Phosphoric Acid (E338) (which is something that is created from one of two sources. It’s either Elemental Phosphorus or it’s Phosphate Rock).|
|Manufacturing||The sourcing ingredient is reacted with Magnesium Oxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, or Magnesium Carbonate. The outcome of that gets purified and dried. Conditions such as temperature, the concentration of the substances before the reaction, and reaction time during the process of combining them determine which form of Magnesium Phosphate will be created.|
|Application||Firming agent, acidity regulator, anti-caking agent, leavening agent, nutrient retention agent, flavor enhancer, and emulsifier. While E343(i) is relatively soluble in water, the other two are not at all (insoluble).|
|Acceptable Daily Intake||None is determined for E343(i). Whereas the other two are claimed to be safe in amounts of up to 70 milligrams per kilogram of body weight daily.|
|Side Effects||Potential side effects in truly excessive amounts are pretty much the same as is the case with Calcium Phosphate (E341). Namely, in the cases of excessive use, it can lead to diarrhea, stomach upset, kidney damage, and electrolyte imbalances (mess with the absorption of minerals like Calcium, Potassium, and Sodium).|
