It helps to support healthy skin, nails, and hair and is necessary for certain enzymes to work properly. Biotin also supports energy production in the body and is required for protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism.” So, the vitamin definitely has plenty of uses [R].
Which is also what covers the claims Solgar makes for its supplement.
The product page itself is very straightforward; a lot of emphases is on being of quality. But the page isn’t really marketing-heavy.
Yes, they have their own local, on-page Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg review section. But that’s about it, apart from, say, the fact that they have donated one million meals. Which I believe does also contribute to marketing and makes it easier to sell.
But there is no stuff like an auto-delivery option that comes with a 25% discount like with the NeoCell Gummy Glow (review). Solgar also doesn’t offer a money-back guarantee like one we get on supplements like the Natrol Biotin 5000 Mcg (review).
Other than that, the supplement of this review is said to be Non-GMO, Vegan-Friendly, Dairy-Free, Gluten-Free, and Kosher. So, that’s plenty.
Hence, all in all, it looks nice. But is it really worth the investment?
Ingredients | They Offer More Than Biotin & It’s Decent Overall
Biotin supplements are typically chosen for their potential to add to hair, nail, and skin health. That said, there are other ways how to do it. For example, that same goal can also be achieved with either Keratin like in the Olly Undeniable Beauty (review) or Collagen like in the Doctor’s Best Collagen (review).
So, yes, Biotin. The Solgar (Super Potency) Biotin 5000 Mcg uses that same approach, too.
Namely, per serving (one capsule), the supplement of this review offers 5000 micrograms of Biotin. In addition, we also get 148 milligrams of Calcium and 115 milligrams of Phosphorus. Here’s what to make of it.
So, Biotin. We’ve got it here in very potent amounts. I mean, 5000 micrograms are intense enough to bring and emphasize quite a few gains. These include but are not limited to gains to hair, nail, skin health, liver metabolism, nervous system’s health, energy levels, healthier blood glucose levels, macronutrient metabolism, as well as helping in fight diabetes, Rett syndrome, Parkinson’s and Crohn’s, cancer, and others [R, R, R, R, R, R].
Also, while the Biotin in Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg is likely the synthetic form of the vitamin, it doesn’t matter enough to be considered a flaw. I mean, it’s d-Biotin for the natural form but since they don’t specify it, it’s likely the synthetic option. Still, both are very well absorbed and used by the body. So, it’s more like a side note [R, R, R].
As for Calcium, it comes in the form of Dicalcium Phosphate. Which is not even close to the best form for the mineral. I mean, something like the Calcium Orotate would be so much better. But then, again, Dicalcium Phosphate feels to me like a decent enough source. And it’s not like we’re taking the supplement of this review for its Calcium contents [R, R, R]
Moreover, what I would not pay attention to at all is the Phosphorus aspect. Because typically we will get enough of it from the diet alone. Hence, supplementation of it is not necessary. Sure, there can be exceptions but that’s the general rule [R, R].
So, the beneficial aspects are decent. Furthermore, I feel that we can easily trust the manufacturing quality of Solgar as well. I mean, yes, they don’t do third-party testing but their in-house seems to be capable enough. Thus, I would that their Biotin 5000 Mcg has it rather decent [R, R, R, R].
Side Effects | Side Effects We’ll Review From Two Different Aspects
Side effects are the product of additives. And supplements can really have it wrong when it comes to that. To illustrate, something like the Natrol Biotin 5000 Mcg (review) and NeoCell Biotin Bursts (review) both have it wrong by choosing Maltodextrin, at least the way I see it. But that’s only the typical case (namely, additives being the culprit) [R, R, R, R, R, R, R].
When it comes to supplements that reach beyond the common approach or supplements that use certain nutrients or substances in truly intensified amounts, those too can create side effects.
Therefore, we will look at both.
As Far As Additives, Solgar’s 5000 Mcg Use A Really Fine Bunch, No Worries Whatsoever
So, for additives, the Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg uses Microcrystalline Cellulose, Vegetable Cellulose, Vegetable Magnesium Stearate, and Silica. In other words, four ingredients but no real dangers. Here’s to elaborate on that.
Microcrystalline Cellulose is one of my absolute favorites when it comes to the additional ingredients for the making of the supplement. That’s because it’s created from the natural polysaccharides that are present in all plants. And hence, it’s one of the most harmless things to add to a supplement ever [R, R, R, R].
The same can be said about a simple Vegetable Cellulose. I mean, it’s something that we consume with vegetables and fruits naturally anyway. On that note, there’s literally no reason to ever avoid it in supplements [R, R, R, R].
As for Vegetable Magnesium Stearate, many will say that we should avoid this. That is not, however, congruent with the research and the fact that mother’s milk also has the constituent of Magnesium Stearate (Stearic Acid) blamed for all the ill effects. The reality of things is that it’s a thoroughly harmless ingredient. On which a number of high-profile doctors also agree [R, R, R, R, R].
Silica or Silicon Dioxide is another substance found in nature. And in line with that, it’s also something absolutely harmless to consume. It’s found in many foods and it’s often a part of supplements. And it is not necessary to avoid it [R, R, R].
In other words, this is just a really long way of saying that there are no concerns as far as side effects from additives of Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg. But what about the beneficial aspects.
Prolonged Use Of Vitamin B7 In Such High Amounts Can Cause Problems, Hence Be Careful
Well, as far as those beneficial aspects, Calcium and Phosphorus won’t create any problems. But those 5000 micrograms of Biotin, which can be regarded as an overwhelming abundance of the vitamin, definitely can. Here’s to elaborate on that.
So, I guess it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that 5000 micrograms of Biotin are a lot. I mean, it’s almost 17 thousand percent of the Daily Value. Also, it’s five times the upper margin established for the best practices for nutrient amounts.
Thus, the question is can that be harmful?
The first thing to look at in this regard is whether there have been established Upper Tolerable Intake Levels for Biotin. These are the maximum levels at which it is okay and void of harm to consume the nutrient for very long periods of time. Biotin doesn’t have that level established [R, R].
The next thing is to simply recognize that any water-soluble vitamin (which Biotin is) our bodies are capable of simply discarding if it recognizes that there’s too much of it. That said, too large doses for too long periods of time can still create problems as illustrated by Pyridoxine (vitamin B6 which is also water-soluble) [R, R, R].
So, what’s the game plan here?
Well, the way I see it, there are no reliable data to say for sure how much Biotin is too much. But there is an inherent fail-safe that our bodies possess. Hence, opting for temporary use of a supplement like the Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg is probably the safest and wisest way how to approach it.
On that note, I personally wouldn’t take such a supplement for more than three months at a time. After which I would incorporate a break period. And truly listen to my body and adjust as it feels right.
Now, the last thing in the game plan would be to know what are the side effects that basically report that there’s too much Biotin in our system (so, to know when to 100% take a break). Thus, do know that overconsumption can be accompanied by side effects like skin allergies (rashes, flushing, itchiness), excessive urination, insomnia, weakened immunity, excessive thirst, flushing, rashes, pain, or itchiness on or in the chest or throat, increased blood sugar levels, and some others [R, R, R, R].
Reviews | Success Rate For Solgar Super Potency Supplement Is Busted
For the purposes of this Solgar Biotin 5000 mcg review, I believe it’s a must to look at the customer reviews as well. Granted, they are not the most reliable as it has been often indicated with supplements like the Sanar Collagen Wrinkle Formula (review) or RejuviCare Super Collagen (review) but still. They do help to paint a much more dynamic picture of any given product.
So, how well it has been doing?
Given that there are no Solgar Biotin 5000 mcg reviews on the manufacturer’s page, I took my research to all third-party sellers and retailers I could find. Here are the results of that.
In total, I came across 3,062 customer comments. Of these, the overwhelming majority were great; namely, 2,979 ratings were for the Solgar supplement (three-star, four-star, five-star). The other 83 wasn’t that positive, however. They didn’t like the thing at all (one-star, two-star reviews).
To do the math, that’s an absolutely insane success rate. Namely, according to the Solgar Super Potency Biotin 5000 mcg customer reviews, 97.3% of people were really happy with the product.
As noted in the intro of this article, there were, indeed, many that were thrilled with the benefits. And there were just plenty of people who truly swore by it.
Now, what about those other mere 3% that weren’t that happy?
Well, some got sick due to this. For others, it caused break outs. For others more, it was too large capsules and troubles to swallow them that didn’t feel right for them. Then, there were some that complained about the label (that it includes Calcium). And, yes, there were also quite a few people who experienced no effect whatsoever.
Pricing | The Product Is Not A Good Deal In Terms Of Pricing
Another practical aspect definitely worth looking at is pricing. Because whatever the case, we don’t want to get sold something that is not actually worth the money. Those products should stay on the shelves. So, how great is Solgar Biotin in this regard?
Per container (50 capsules), the supplement of this review typically costs $10.42. That’s 20.8 cents per capsule or 20.8 cents for every 5000 micrograms of Biotin. How great is that?
I guess I have to point out right off the bat that it isn’t that great at all. I mean, it’s on average more expensive than any other truly viable thing out there.
For example, let’s take the Now Foods Biotin 5,000 Mcg. It typically costs $6.25 for a container of 60 capsules. That’s 10.4 cents for every 5000 micrograms of Biotin. Namely, it’s exactly half the price.
For that price difference, we would expect the Solgar option to be significantly better in every other aspect but that’s not really the case. I mean, yes, Solgar offers Calcium and Phosphorus (which we don’t need with Biotin). But they are both Vegan, Non-GMO, and Kosher. Both do great additives and have awesome success rates.
So, it’s kind of not even close in favor of Now Foods.
Another brand to compare the Solgar Super Potency Biotin 5000 mcg to is Doctor’s Best Biotin 5000 Mcg. The latter typically costs $9.53 for 120 capsules of 5000 micrograms. Meaning, it’s 7.9 cents for Solgar’s 20.8. Meaning, Doctor’s Best is basically one-third the price.
And yet still, it has great additives, it’s Non-GMO, Vegan, and Gluten-Free. So, it’s realistically no worse than the supplement of this review.
Which does leave me thinking. Why did no one of the customer reviews point out this fact? I mean, my best guess is that it must be marketing. Solgar offers 50 or 100 capsules per container where its rivals typically provide 60 or 120 capsules. Hence, the actual price difference is well masked.
Overall | Yes, Solgar Biotin Is Good But It’s Pricey, Too
I have to admit that as I was writing the review, I was genuinely thrilled with what the Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg has to offer. This was up to a point when I was starting to do the math and get into all aspects of pricing.
I mean, Solgar is properly expensive. I mean, those 2-3x on price, when compared to other viable options, feel to be just too much. Hence, I think that’s a proper negative of the supplement.
That said, if we can look past that, then there are actually quite a few positives.
I mean, the Biotin supplement does it decently when it comes to the beneficial ingredients. Plus, some Calcium and Phosphorus. Manufacturing quality feels decent, too. Then, the additives are really awesome. And success rates, as I’ve mentioned quite a few times already, feel to me absolutely busted.
To that end, there were definitely considerably fewer folks encountering problems with this Solgar Biotin 5000 Mcg than what I’ve seen with other Biotin supplements.
Hence, taking all that into account, (out of avoid it, consider it, shortlist it, buy it) I believe that the Solgar Super Potency attempt at vitamin B7 is a shortlist-able one. Yes, it’s great but it’s pricey, too. Too pricey.
On that note, I believe that a much better approach to ensuring benefits to hair, skin, nail health is to opt for a Collagen supplement. It’s also the more carefree kind of approach because we will never have to do any break periods with such a supplement. It also offers awesome benefits. In regard to the pricing, I have to admit that I will willingly pay more for a supplement if its quality and performance are better than its competitors. I honestly believe in the adage “You get what you pay for”, so this sounds like a Biotin supplement I would buy. As you noted, there are some great plusses to this product, including good manufacturing and general ingredients.
When considering a B vitamin its also important to remember that vitamin B is a fat soluble vitamin, which means it can be stored in the body and not flushed out like the water soluble vitamins A,D,E and K. I would think that anyone taking Biotin long term should check with their doctor first.

Regarding water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, I’m pretty sure that they are the other way around. Meaning, B vitamins are water-soluble and A, D, E, K are the fat-soluble ones. :)
